Waterproof LED Display: How to Choose the Right Outdoor Screen

Outdoor LED displays face much more than rain, so choosing a waterproof LED display is not simply about finding an IP65 label.

In this guide, we’ll explain IP ratings, compare IP65 to IP68, and help you choose the right protection level for your installation.

1. What Is a Waterproof LED Display?

A waterproof LED display is designed to operate reliably in outdoor environments. It can withstand rain, humidity, dust, and changing temperatures.

Higher protection comes from the complete design, including the LED modules, cabinet sealing, connectors, and enclosure.

Waterproof does not simply mean “IP65.”

A screen marked IP65 may handle normal outdoor rain very well, but that does not automatically make it suitable for every environment.

The right question is: How much water protection does your installation actually need?

2. What IP Rating Do You Need for a Waterproof LED Display?

IP stands for Ingress Protection. It is defined by IEC to describe how well electrical equipment is protected against the entry of solids and water.

An IP rating normally contains two numbers:

NumberWhat It IndicatesExamples
First digitProtection against solid objects and dust
  • 5 = dust protected
  • 6 = dust-tight
Second digitProtection against water
  • 5 = water jets
  • 6 = powerful water jets
  • 7 = temporary immersion
  • 8 = continuous immersion under specified conditions

For outdoor LED displays, common types include IP65, IP66, and IP67.

(1) IP65 LED Display – The Standard Choice

An IP65 waterproof LED screen is dust-tight and protected against water jets from different directions.

For most permanent outdoor LED displays, IP65 is the practical starting point.

If your screen is installed outdoors and exposed to normal rain but is not expected to be submerged, IP65 is often enough.

(2) IP66 LED Display – Extra Protection

An outdoor IP66 LED screen provides the same dust-tight protection as IP65 but offers stronger protection against powerful water jets.

For a normal LED billboard, IP66 may not be necessary. But for a particularly exposed installation, the additional water protection can provide useful headroom.

(3) IP67 LED Display – Protection Against Temporary Immersion

IP67 is designed to withstand temporary immersion in water under the conditions specified by the test standard.

This makes it more relevant for installations where water accumulation or temporary flooding is a realistic concern.

For example:

  • Flood-prone outdoor locations
  • Low-level installations

(4) IP68 — Protection for More Demanding Water Exposure

For standard outdoor LED billboards and building-mounted LED displays, an IP68 LED panel is usually unnecessary.

For most buyers, paying for IP68 when the screen will simply be exposed to rain doesn’t make much sense.

3. Which IP Rating Should You Choose?

IP RatingWater ProtectionTypical Outdoor LED ApplicationRecommended For
IP65Water jetsBillboards, building facades, retail, stadiumsMost outdoor projects
IP66Powerful water jetsHighly exposed outdoor locationsHeavy rain / harsh exposure
IP67Temporary immersionFlood-prone or low-level installationsWater accumulation risk
IP68Continuous immersion under specified conditionsSpecialized applicationsUnusual or extreme water exposure

The highest IP rating is not automatically the best choice.

Start with the installation environment, then choose the protection level that matches the actual risk.

4. Is IP65 Waterproof Enough for an Outdoor LED Display?

Yes. For most permanent outdoor LED displays, IP65 is sufficient when the complete cabinet and installation are properly designed for outdoor use.

IP65 outdoor LED display is suitable for billboards, building facades, shopping malls, stadiums, and roadside advertising.

There is another point worth remembering: IP protection is only one part of outdoor durability.

A screen can have an IP65 rating and still need to deal with strong sunlight, UV exposure, humidity, temperature changes, dust, and salt spray.

For a coastal project, for example, we would not look at IP rating alone. Cabinet sealing, corrosion resistance, component quality, ventilation, drainage, and maintenance access all matter for long-term reliability.

So rather than asking: “Is IP65 the best waterproof rating?”

ask: “Is IP65 appropriate for my installation environment?”

5. How Do We Make an LED Display Waterproof?

A reliable outdoor waterproof LED display comes from multiple details working together.

(1) Waterproof LED Modules

PCBs and electronic components are coated with conformal coating to prevent moisture, salt spray, and mold corrosion.

Waterproof silicone gaskets around the module edges help seal the cabinet, while GOB (Glue on Board) or epoxy encapsulation adds another layer of protection to the LED surface.

(2) Sealed LED Cabinet

A sealed cabinet keeps rain and moisture away from the internal electronics. Die-cast aluminum or profile aluminum cabinets are commonly used for outdoor waterproof LED displays.

(3) Protective Cabinet Coating

The cabinet surface can be finished with a protective coating designed to resist corrosion, moisture, oxidation, and heat.

(4) Waterproof Power & Signal Connections

IP68-rated waterproof connectors and waterproof cables help protect connections from moisture, reducing the risk of short circuits, signal failures, and component damage.

(5) Drainage & Ventilation

Drainage holes, typically around 3–8 mm depending on the cabinet design, or built-in drainage channels can help remove accumulated water quickly.

At the same time, proper ventilation helps manage heat and humidity inside the cabinet.

In other words, waterproofing is a system—not a sticker that says “IP65.”

6. Where Are Waterproof LED Displays Used?

The right waterproof LED display depends heavily on what the screen will face after installation.

A roadside billboard, a stadium screen, and a coastal display may all be outdoors, but their weather exposure is very different.

(1) Outdoor Advertising Billboards

Billboards and roadside screens are constantly exposed to rain, dust, and direct sunlight.

IP65 waterproof LED screen is often suitable for standard installations, while brightness and cabinet durability are equally important.

(2) Stadiums & Sports Venues

Scoreboards and perimeter LED displays may face heavy rain and water spray from multiple directions.

More exposed locations may justify IP66 LED displays and robust cabinet construction.

(3) Outdoor Plaza Floor

Because of their low-lying installation location, floor LED displays on outdoor plazas may temporarily accumulate water during extreme rainstorms.

Therefore, they require higher protection: both the front and rear must meet IP67 standards.

(4) Events & Entertainment

Concerts, festivals, and temporary events can expose outdoor rental LED screens to sudden rain and changing weather.

Here, water protection, quick maintenance, and easy installation all matter.

(5) Coastal & High-Humidity Areas

Near the sea, rain is not the only concern. Salt spray and high humidity can accelerate corrosion.

So we should consider corrosion-resistant cabinet materials, protective coatings, sealed connections, and component protection.

7. How to Choose the Right Waterproof LED Display?

Don’t choose an outdoor LED display by IP rating alone.

We recommend working through these six questions first.

Step 1 — Where Will the Screen Be Installed?

  • Fully exposed outdoors: Start with IP65 and evaluate whether IP66/IP67 is needed.
  • Partially sheltered: IP65 is often more than sufficient.
  • Flood-prone or low-level installation: Consider IP67 or higher, depending on the actual water exposure.

Step 2 — How Much Rain, Humidity, or Salt Exposure Will It Face?

EnvironmentRecommend IP Level
Normal outdoor rainIP65
Heavy rain / strong water sprayIP66
Temporary flooding or water accumulationIP67
Coastal areasFocus on corrosion protection, coatings, and sealed connections, not IP rating alone.

Step 3 — What Is the Viewing Distance?

Choose pixel pitch according to viewing distance, not simply because a smaller pitch sounds better.

Waterproof LED screen pixel pitch & viewing distance

  • Short viewing distance (4 – 5 m): P3.91–P4.81 range may make sense.
  • Medium distance (5 – 7 m): P5–P6.67 LED display is common.
  • Long-distance advertising (10m+): P8–P10+ can be more practical.

The exact choice also depends on screen size and content.

Step 4 — How Much Sunlight Does the Screen Receive?

For direct outdoor sunlight, brightness becomes critical.

  • Shaded / partially sheltered: Around 4,000–5,000 nits may be enough.
  • Typical outdoor use: Around 5,000–6,500 nits.
  • Strong direct sunlight: Consider 7,000 nits or higher, 10,000 nits, depending on the location and screen orientation.

Step 5 — Do You Need Front or Rear Maintenance?

  • Front maintenance: Better when the screen is mounted directly against a wall or access behind the display is limited.
  • Rear maintenance: More suitable when there is sufficient service space behind a permanent outdoor screen.

For wall-mounted installations, front maintenance can save a lot of time when replacing modules or servicing components.

Step 6 — Is It a Permanent or Temporary Installation?

InstallationPrioritizeRecommended Displays
PermanentCabinet durability, heat dissipation, and long-term maintenanceOutdoor fixed LED display
Temporary/rentalWeight, quick installation, maintenance access and transportationIP65 rental LED display

Final Decision: Don’t start with IP rating. Start with the installation environment and project requirements.

8. Waterproof LED Display Checklist for Buyers

Before placing an order, check these points with your waterproof LED display manufacturer:

  • Cabinet sealing: Check how the cabinet, modules, doors, and seams are sealed against water.
  • LED module protection: Ask whether the modules use conformal coating, silicone sealing, GOB, or other moisture protection.
  • Power & signal connectors: Confirm that outdoor waterproof connectors and cables are used.
  • Drainage: Make sure the cabinet has a practical way to remove accumulated water.
  • Corrosion protection: Especially important for coastal or high-humidity locations.
  • Maintenance access: Choose front maintenance when rear access is limited; use rear maintenance when there is enough service space.
  • Testing: Ask for actual waterproof test videos, factory test records, or project references.
  • Warranty & support: Confirm warranty coverage, spare parts, installation guidance, and after-sales technical support.

10. The Final Thoughts

Choosing a waterproof LED display should start with the real installation environment, not simply an IP rating.

Look at water exposure, viewing distance, sunlight, maintenance access, corrosion risk, and long-term use together.
